Video Montage of Past Annual Conferences

On Monday morning, June 1, 2020, we should have be gathered in Hyannis getting ready for opening ceremonies for the Kevin J. Regan Annual Spring 2020 Conference. Instead, we are experiencing the global pandemic of Covid-19. Despite the fact that canceling our Annual Conference was not only inevitable but the appropriate course of action, the Executive Board did not make the decision lightly. This would have been our 83rd Annual Conference and no one can remember, nor is there a record of, another conference having been canceled. Over the last few months, we have all experienced changes in our daily lives some of which were easier to accept than others. Not having the MACRS Annual Conference is one such change.

The professional challenges faced by each board over the last few months have been met. As I understand it, every retirement board in the Commonwealth has issued the retiree monthly payroll without exception. Seems simple enough. However, this unassuming task was only possible because of the dedication and selfless actions of our administrators and staff. Board meetings were held using technology to keep us all safe. As the weeks turned into months, our processes evolved to create a balance between unwavering service to our members and retirees while keeping ourselves and staff safe.

At home, the quest for antibacterial products and toilet paper took charge, designated space for home offices were created, parents became overnight teachers, strategic measures were implemented for grocery shopping and face masks became part of our wardrobes. We are all doing our best to adjust to social distancing. No graduations, weddings or large celebrations. Many families facing financial challenges and uncertainty. Several experienced sickness and loss. The departed were deprived of a proper end to their journey. Everything is canceled, except hope.

I hope that each and every one of you and your families stay safe, healthy and remain resilient during this unprecedented time. We could not hold the Annual Conference, but as our retirement community has adapted, so will MACRS. At this time, the format of our next gathering is unknown but, rest assured, we will meet again. The experiences from our past make us stronger and mold our future and someday this time will be part of our past. Until then, enjoy some memories from past conferences and look forward to the future.

In solidarity and hope,
Kathleen Kiely-Becchetti,
President
