Since the mid-1990s, legislation has been proposed to replace state and local defined benefit (DB) pension plans with defined contribution (DC) plans. The pace of these proposals increased from 2003 to 2006, partly because of the equity market downturn in 2000–2002 that increased contribution rates for many DB plans, both public and private.

The Commonwealth’s Pension System: A Good Investment for Massachusetts As the Baby Boomer generation approaches retirement age, the goal of “retirement security” is the subject of increasingly more research, discussion and concern. Kathleen Kiely-Becchetti It is hard to believe that this Annual Spring Conference marks my one year anniversary as MACRS President. It has been a productive year representing MACRS at the state and national levels, cultivating relationships, new and old, learning from our vast resources, organizing the conferences and planning for the Association’s future. All important tasks, yet, laying the ground work for our future is among the most essential.

On Monday morning, June 1, 2020, we should have be gathered in Hyannis getting ready for opening ceremonies for the Kevin J. Regan Annual Spring 2020 Conference. Instead, we are experiencing the global pandemic of Covid-19. Despite the fact that canceling our Annual Conference was not only inevitable but the appropriate course of action, the Executive Board did not make the decision lightly. This would have been our 83rd Annual Conference and no one can remember, nor is there a record of, another conference having been canceled.
